Brownsville, Edinburg named Texas arts districts (45)

The South Texas border towns of Brownsville and Edinburg were named as two of the four newest Texas arts districts in the state. The designations could help the region attract state funding and tourism, according to a Texas Commission on the Arts commissioner.

The Edinburg Arts District and the Mitte Cultural District in Brownsville were named alongside the Galveston African American Cultural Heritage District and the Lufkin Cultural District.

“It’s huge,” said Diane Milliken Garza, a commissioner with the Texas Commission on the Arts.

The designations were discussed on an episode of Border Report Live hosted by Sandra Sanchez, who spoke with Milliken Garza about the importance of the arts designations for the region.
