Forbes 400: Elon Musk leads at $908 billion as wealthiest list hits record $8 trillion
Forbes ranked Elon Musk as the wealthiest American for 2026, with an estimated net worth of $908 billion, leading the latest Forbes 400 list. The 400 richest Americans are now worth a combined record $8 trillion, Forbes reported Tuesday, up from $6.6 trillion a year earlier.
The minimum net worth required to make the annual list climbed to $4.4 billion, a threshold Forbes said left 590 billionaires off the rankings.
Nebraska’s Warren Buffett ranked No. 10 overall with an estimated net worth of $144 billion. Musk, who Forbes noted was briefly the world’s first trillionaire, topped the list.
Twelve states had no resident on this year’s Forbes 400: Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia.
Sixty-two women ranked within the Forbes 400, the same total as last year. The wealthiest among them remains Alice Walton, the only daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, with an estimated net worth of $118 billion. She ranks as the third-wealthiest Texan and the 13th-wealthiest American, behind Musk.
Other women topping their states include Kentucky’s Tamara Gustavson, Maryland’s Annette Lerner and her family, Massachusetts’ Abigail Johnson, Nevada’s Miriam Adelson and her family, Virginia’s Jacqueline Mars and Wisconsin’s Diane Hendricks.
Three states have a new wealthiest resident. In California, Google’s Larry Page replaced Oracle’s Larry Ellison, who moved to Florida. Home Depot’s Arthur Blank beat the children of Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy in Georgia. Denise York and her family, owners of the San Francisco 49ers, edged out Les Wexner and his family, tied to Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, in Ohio.
President Donald Trump again made the list. Forbes estimated his net worth at $7 billion, down from $7.3 billion last year, dropping him from No. 201 to No. 245.
Thirty-four people who made last year’s rankings failed to do so this year, including Roblox cofounder David Baszucki.
