UNM women’s golf hosts 13-team season opener in Albuquerque

The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is set to host a 13-team field in Albuquerque for the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, the program’s season opener. The tournament runs through Tuesday and includes reigning Mountain West Conference champion UNLV, giving the Lobos an early-season test on their home course.

Head coach Jill Trujillo said it is too early to identify specific weaknesses with the tournament still ahead. The team has instead focused on fundamentals.

“We always work hard on short game, inside 100 yards, putting,” Trujillo said.

Ciara Rushmer pointed to stamina and recovery as key factors for players navigating the tournament schedule.

“It’s all about stamina,” Rushmer said. “It’s 36 holes and 18, so who can fuel themselves the longest, who can rest well and recover.”

The Lobos enter the season with several new faces on the roster. Chelsea Truong said the team has continued its preparation despite the changes.

“We’ve had quite a few new girls this year, but we’ve been working hard,” Truong said. “I’m excited to see how this tournament goes and the rest of our season.”
