Navy names new class of ships in Washington for Navajo people

Officials in Washington formally honored the Navajo people by dedicating a new line of military vessels. The designation establishes a recognized naval class to honor Native American service members.

Lawmakers passed legislation in 2017 supporting the vessel name USNS Navajo. The decision became official on Wednesday in Washington.

Workers expect to complete the first ship in 2021. That lead vessel will carry the name USNS Navajo. More vessels will follow.

A naval class defines a group of military vessels built using the same design. Washington leaders oversee naming plans for active military fleets.

Future ships will honor prominent Native Americans. Some vessels may honor Navajo Code Talkers.
