Authorities search for lost radiographic device near Jal on Highway 128

Deputies are searching for a missing radiographic tool along Highway 128 near Jal. The equipment contains radioactive material that remains safe only if its container stays intact.

The Eddy County Sheriff’s Department reported the loss happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday. It fell near mile marker 35. The search continues.

Officials say the tool is similar in size to a loaf of bread. It weighs about 50 pounds, according to deputies. A $5,000 reward is offered for its return.

Anyone who finds the item should call the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office. Tipsters can also contact New Mexico State Police.

Officials say knowingly keeping the device is a federal crime. Federal laws regulate the possession and transport of radioactive industrial items. These rules protect public safety near Jal.

Deputies urge anyone with details to come forward immediately.
