Dominique Smith arrested in Algodones DWI with child in car

Dominique Smith faces multiple charges following his traffic arrest near Algodones on Saturday evening. A young child sat unhurt inside the vehicle during the interstate stop, according to law enforcement records.

New Mexico State Police pulled over a driver around 7:30 p.m. on Interstate 25. The stop occurred near mile post 252 in Sandoval County.

Officers said Smith was driving almost 100 miles per hour. That area carries a 75-mile-per-hour speed limit. His vehicle was also drifting in and out of the travel lane.

An officer wrote in a report that Smith showed signs of intoxication. Breathalyzer test results showed him at twice the legal limit. A 3-year-old child was also discovered inside the vehicle.

The child was not injured during the drive. Smith was taken into custody on the scene. He remains jailed.

The driver faces a list of charges. The counts include aggravated DWI and DWI with a minor in the vehicle. He remains held in Sandoval County.

A breathalyzer measures alcohol levels in the blood. State law treats DWI cases involving minors as enhanced criminal violations.

Smith awaits his next court appearance in Algodones. Authorities have not scheduled the hearing date.
