Shadrack Sibiya arrested in South Africa sex offence case quits police

Former deputy head of police Shadrack Sibiya resigned in Johannesburg on Monday while facing corruption and sex offence allegations. The departure ends his disciplinary proceedings following his arrest last month. Sibiya tendered his resignation through his lawyers on Monday.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said Sibiya submitted the letter directly at the start of his hearing. The former senior officer faced an ongoing disciplinary case at the time.

“As the former senior officer had an ongoing disciplinary case against him at the time of his resignation, his departure from the service is therefore regarded as a dishonorable discharge,” said Mathe.

Sibiya is currently held in prison. He was arrested for alleged rape and grooming of a minor last month. Sibiya has denied the charges.

His application for bail has been postponed to Oct. 13. Sibiya has been under suspension since September last year.

Sibiya has also been the subject of a judicial commission of inquiry in Johannesburg. The inquiry investigates wide-ranging corruption claims inside the police force. It also probes alleged ties to criminal networks.

The commission is chaired by retired Judge Mbuyiseni Madlanga. Sibiya has been accused of receiving large sums of cash from alleged criminals. Witnesses also accused him of accepting gifts.

He denied all accusations during his testimony before the commission. He denies all wrongdoing.

A judicial commission of inquiry in Johannesburg investigates systemic misconduct across public bodies. These commissions hear testimony from witnesses under oath. They submit findings directly to authorities for further review.

Sibiya remains behind bars pending his upcoming court appearance.
