North Korea fires projectile toward sea, Seoul military says

North Korea launched at least one weapon toward eastern waters, South Korean military officials stated in Seoul. The test extends a recent series of military demonstrations across the region.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported the action on Monday. Officials did not state if the weapon was ballistic. They also did not report how far it flew.

The activity succeeded an Oct. 3 weapons test. North Korea described that earlier device as a hypersonic intermediate-range missile. It was planned to bypass defense systems in South Korea and Japan.

North Korea conducted live-fire drills in recent weeks. The nation also put a new warship into service. Leader Kim Jong Un continued to display his nuclear program. He rejected diplomatic talks offered by the United States and South Korea.

Regional disputes increased following land mine blasts last month. The explosions occurred near the border. Three South Korean soldiers suffered injuries.

The South Korean military and the United Nations Command investigated the border explosions. Both groups concluded North Korea planted the devices. North Korea denied responsibility. The country also mocked demands from Seoul seeking an apology.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff directs operations for the armed forces of South Korea. The command monitors weapons activity along the border and near maritime zones. It shares defense assessments with allied regional partners.

South Korean forces continue surveillance across coastal areas and the border from Seoul.
