Three people drown in Newcomb flooding on Navajo Nation

Three people drowned in a flood in Newcomb on the Navajo Nation early Wednesday, according to the Navajo Police Department. Two adults and a juvenile were killed, and the incident remains under investigation.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., the Shiprock District responded to a possible drowning after receiving a report of people being washed away in a nearby flooded area.

Officers searched the area along with Navajo Nation Fire and Rescue Newcomb and Shiprock Stations, Navajo EMS, and the 4Corners K-9 Search and Rescue. The three victims were found to have drowned.

Navajo Police Department shared thoughts and prayers with the family and friends of those affected.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren issued a statement.

“There are no words that can ease the pain of losing a loved one so suddenly, and our hearts are especially heavy knowing that three lives were lost,” Nygren said. “To the family, relatives, and loved ones who are grieving today, we offer our deepest condolences. We pray that you are surrounded by strength, comfort, and the love of your family and community in the difficult days ahead.”
